Day 4 (84.0 kg - 23.0% Body Fat)

Weight and Body Fat
This is hard to believe! For three consecutive days, I ate only when I was hungry, I ordered smaller portions, and I omitted all kinds of snacks and sweets. And still I gain weight!

I guess these figures are still within the usual daily bandwidth (due to eating, drinking, sweating and excreting), though I take my weight and body fat directly after getting up each day, after being to the toilet and before eating or drinking anything. This seems to provide the most consistent results to me.

So this is rather disappointing to me! I used to observe the simple connection "eat less - weiht less" with me.

I mean, my recommended calorie intake (male, 36 yrs, 190cm, 84 kg) per day is 2.450 kcal, and I didn't exceed 2.000 kcal during the past days!

Blame it on Spurlock!
Maybe I should blame it on Morgan Spurlock! After watching his movie, my body believes it has to become fat by eating at McDonald's, even if I eat significantly less than necessary!

Could this be possible? Could it be the Americans get fat because they believe they have to, considering what they eat? (Sorry for using the term "the Americans" in this simple and somewhat negative context.) I mean it's a common belief that fast food will make you fat, not considering the actual amount.

Well, I don't believe that - yet. I rather think that my body adapts to my new eating habits. Actually, I started eating less already on Wednesday, after I had bought the scale and discovered that my weight was 85.7 kg, almost 6 kg above my personal optimum.

Maybe it's the breakfast. Usually, I do not have breakfast, or at least not that much, but only a little snack. Now, the breakfast seems to be the most energetic meal of the day.

For the next days, I will keep the breakfasts smaller.

Breakfast
I really didn't feel well when I woke up this morning. Not because of the food, but because of my cold. I took my weight and body fat and then 2 Vicks DayMed to surpress the symptoms. (I used to avoid such "symptom surpressing" but coughing can really exhaust you, and I'd like to use my energy for getting well.)

I updated this website with yesterday's dinner and today's weight. Due to the Vicks soon I felt better and felt the wish to run, a little, at least. As I didn't want to get too far away from home, as I couldn't know how the running would affect me, I decided to circle around the small lake at Punggol Park very near to my place. To have something in my stomach, I decided to have 2 of the Chicken McNuggets I had kept, and ate 3 ;-)

Normally, I take one or two bottles of Gatorade with me when I run. For the McDiet, I'm going to use Evian mineral water. As I only had 1.5 l bottles, I emptied one 710ml Gatorade bottle into the kitchen sink to fill it with Evian. (I like the twist cap of the Gatorade bottles they sell here.) While the Gatorade was flowing down the sink, it came to my mind that currently they offer "Collateral" sports bottles with the McDonald's delivery service. But you have to order for S$ 28 or more, and this would probably cause some collateral damage to my body weight...

Back home frome running (with a cold, 18/07/2004)I monitored my running distance with a handheld GPS device (Garmin etrex vista). It turned out that it is exactly 1 km to the lake and 1 km around the lake. So it's easy to adjust and monitor the distance in future, without using the GPS each time.

I circled the lake 3 times to end up with 5 km. I did not want to overdo with the cold. I did not feel perfect, but I felt good and certainly better than without running.

I had the other 3 McNuggets then.

Lunch
This morning I had coughed up some phlegm that made me decide to visit a doctor. I feared that going by cab would only worsen it (as most of the cabs in Singapore are rolling refrigerators) so I walked to a 24/7 clinic 3km away. The great thing: I knew I would pass a McDonald's, even though I hadn't been in that area before. From the map I knew there was a shopping mall - so there must be a McDonald's, right?

A McDonald's playground? No - in Singapore these playgrounds are everywhere! When I was walking to the clinic, I noticed a playground. Maybe I focused a little too much on McDonald's over the past days, because I thought maybe there is a McDonald's. But it was just a normal playground. Yes! In Singapore they have these playgrounds everywhere! By the way - the kids can still be found at McDonald's. How do you explain that, Spurlock?

Can you spot the McDonald's? If the answer is yes, you're a fast food professional! At the mall, it needed the trained senses of a fast food professional to find the restaurant (see left). I had a Big Mac. Due to my cold I decided to substitute the fries with an apple.

First, I thought they should have upsized apples, as the apple appeared quite small to me. But when I ate it, I found it had just the right size. And it really tasted good.

The doctor prescribed me lots of stuff (lozenges, pills, syrups, and antibiotics). Though these things will go to my stomach, I won't consider them food and not mention them further.

Afternoon snack
With a McDiet, grocery shopping is simple! In the afternoon, I had a small snack, as I was not really hungry. I had another yoghurt and tried the milk. Now I know the product and can get it from the supermarket to have it in store at home. As you can see on the left, with a McDiet, grocery shopping is really simple.

By the way, I'm not going to buy Coke light in future. Though I guess everybody would consider Coke light a McDonald's product, it's not available in Singapore restaurants. If they offer any diet soda, it's Lemon Coke light. So that's going to be my standard daytime drink for the next weeks...

Dinner
I wanted to eat at my place, so I got 9 McNuggets from the McDonald's "next door". Hey, that was quite a McNuggets day! I had Curry sauce, Barbeque sauce and Thai Sweet Chili sauce. Yum, yum! In Singapore, they'll give you extra sauces for free. (In Germany, they'd charge the 3rd one extra.)

To serve and protect: They use plastic bags for the takeaway meals in Singapore. When I came to Singapore and noticed that here they put the takeaway meals into plastic bags instead of the brown paper ones, I asked myself why? The fries and the McNuggets will get soft! But now I believe they use the plastic bags to protect the food from the humidity of the air, which would probably do more damage to the food than keeping them in the plastic bags. But this is only a wild guess.

By a meaningful coincidence, before I reach my 1.800 calories today, I still have 150 calories left. And that's exactly the amount of what? - Right, an ice cream cone! ... and the restaurant is still open...
